TAO OF EXHILE
Performed at Midlands Arts Centre May 2002 as Part of the
COLLIDE Commissioning Programme for Black Artists 2002.
I was asked to produce animations for the stage backdrop of
this multimedia, one-man play. The technicians and artists
on the production contributed collaboratively through the
development process of the play.
The story is about an African griot (story-teller) who ventures
to Britain to visit the Queen and discuss with her the plight
of his people. Arriving in Britain, the griot’s mind
reels into delusion and confusion. I used Picasso style drawn
and animated images because his work was influenced by African
masks and sculptural art. Also, Cubism, the art expression
which Picasso championed, was the perception of many sides
of an object simultaneously to form distorted and abstract
forms, as experienced in memory.
Other artists and technicians involved in the production were:
Artist - Anwa Naimbana
Artist - Matthew Krishanu
Technical Consultants - ‘Talking Birds’
