Work entitled - ‘Withdrawn - ’ Saranjit Birdi

In 1995 an event took place in my life which criticised my ability to use drawing as a means of communication in my work as an Architect. This criticism, which was legally found to be unfair and discriminatory, sent me into my ‘exile’. I became withdrawn and went into a depression and confined myself to an attic room throughout a two year Industrial Tribunal.

The performance piece is titled withdrawn ‘Withdrawn’. A lowly figure, an artist, sits chained with hands bound to an artist’s donkey and surrounded by a ring of sand. Over coming his constraints he proceeds to draw with his feet that are still free to move.
