Client: Manor Hospital, Oxford
‘Mitte sectari, rosa quo locorum sera moretur'
(Do not go to that place where the last rose lingers). This
was a proposal for the Manor Hospital, Oxford which was built
on a site originally owned by Oxford united Football Association.
I was selected one of five to put forward a proposal for this
site. The hospital was built on a site originally owned by
Oxford united Football Association. The local Planning Authority's
requirements, as part of the brief, was to pay homage to this
fact. The hospital was designed as a training centre as well
as a day patient care centre.
My desk-top research revealed that prior to this the site
was originally a rose growing field. The piece entitled 'Essence'
is a polished steel arch spanning six metres, with diminishing
sized disks cut out and rotating on the trajectory, with deformed
‘goal post’ supports at each end.
The sculptural form symbolises the struggles to reach our
objectives whether they be a cure for illness or attainment
of qualification. or the winning of a game.
On the steel arch are written the words ‘Mitte sectari,
rosa quo locorum sera moretur' (stop looking for that place
where the last rose may linger) - because life is fleeting.
